Since doing my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certificate four years ago, I’ve written many an email to people asking for advice, so I thought I’d start a sort of online guide to teaching abroad on your own (as opposed to through a programme). Especially since I seem to have learnt a number of lessons since the last time around.
There are two broad ways to go about teaching overseas:
- Through a company. There are many great programs, especially for the big money-markets like South Korea. You apply to the organisation and they help you with the entire process, place you in a job, find accommodation for you, help with the visa process etc. There usually is a good orientation program as well where you are introduced to your new country and fellow teachers.
