Education Standards are a pain in the butt to deal with, but they are very necessary!
Teachers are subject to both national and state standards, but still possess a degree of flexibility in what is taught through instruction and assessment. Standards not only provide content guidelines, but also pressure teachers to teach the test, mainly through multiple-choice assessment preparation. The purpose of national and state content standards is to prepare students to be good citizens, who not only provide economic benefit, but also participate in civics.
Civic participation is differentiated into representative and participatory citizens. Representative is when citizens vote in elections, whereas participatory is taking a more active role by challenging inefficient or unjust legislation. Social Studies teachers nurture transformative citizens through interactive simulations and discussion.
