In my eight years as an English teacher at a small, public high school I have spent a lot of time sitting with large groups of my peers in front of a speaker who has been tasked with the arduous problem of uniting a group of educators with disparate philosophies and responsibilities. Sometimes, this speaker is an outsider who has been paid handsomely for his/her services. Other times, it is a local administrator doing his/her job or a school committee member who has been thrust into an environment that they don’t live in on a day-to-day basis.
All of these poor souls have one thing in common. At some point, at some time – they will pay homage the hallmark of American success and ingenuity : athletic competition.
