Multicultural Education

Sometimes it is difficult to come up with ways to incorporate multicultural education in the classroom. Here are a few suggestions that will assist a teacher who is looking to start off with simple ideas.


Students in elementary school are heavily encouraged to read. A way to incorporate multicultural education is through literature. Selecting books that talk about a person’s day who lives in a different culture or a biography of someone is a great way to introduce students to different cultures and ways of looking at situations. Students can sometimes find it easier to connect with a character in a story, especially if the character’s thoughts are being shared. Once the literature is read, then the teacher should lead a short discussion about what the character experienced, why they felt that way, and then ask the students how they would feel.
