In my opinion, creating and agreeing on a contract that focuses on how everyone wants to bre treated, and holding one another accountable for it is similar to rules without the negative conotation.
Teachers can and should coach students into agreeing on ideas of an ideal
classroom (remembering we all make mistakes) if students cannot or do not say the key thoughts of how a kind, positive and safe environment should be. Rules are not procedures! Procedures must be in place to allow the classroom to function smoothly as well.
